Tens Of Thousands Sharks Swarming Florida Beaches

It could be a scene from the next instalment of the Sharknado series, but scarily this one is actually a true story. Tens of thousands of sharks have been spotted mere metres away from white sandy beaches in the US state of Florida.

“There are literally tens of thousands of sharks a stone’s throw away from our shoreline. You could throw a pebble and literally strike a shark. They are that close,” Stephen Kajiura, head of Florida Atlantic University’s shark lab, told CBS12.

Take a look at this video footage shot from above the beaches. What looks to be thousands of tiny fish, are actually swarms of sharks.

The Blacktip species of sharks are said to be migrating south towards warmer waters, but hopefully not so far south that we spot them off the Gold Coast. This species of shark grows to be 1.5metres in length, and while aren’t the cause for any fatal attacks, they are responsible for the bulk of Florida shark attacks.

Scientists are having a field day studying this rare occurrence. “Successfully tagged 5 blacktip sharks with acoustic transmitters this morning. Great conditions — water was calm, flat, clear, and loaded with sharks,” Shark Migration posted on their Facebook page.
