Did you know it’s illegal to drive a taxi in Queensland and NOT have a bale of hay in the boot?

96five’s Ken and Nicky certainly didn’t and they wondered if Brisbane cabbie drivers were aware of the requirement, so they rang up friend of the show, Matt the Cabbie.

Matt shared the contents of his taxis boot which included a food delivery bag, a street directory and a butternut pumpkin. He thought Ken and Nicky were joking when they revealed that he was legally required to carry a bale of hay in his taxis boot.

According to NRMA, this is still a current road rule along with not letting your pet steer and slowing your horse down in “church zones”. A bale of hay was required back when taxis were horse driven.

Along with these strange road rules, in Victoria, you cannot wear hot pink hot pants after midday on a Sunday. It’s also illegal to crash a wedding or a funeral and to do so, could set you back $10,000 in fines.

A law breaker no more, Matt the Cabbie now has a bale of hay in the boot

While it’s unlikely that Matt will receive a fine for his lack of hay bale, he went to work rectifying the issue at once.
