But is Hamilton worth the hype?
Hamilton is hard to put into words. When you do try and describe it, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. A rap musical about a founding father? You can be forgiven for thinking, “pass”.
I’ve listened to the soundtrack and watched the Disney+ special dozens of times and I’ve seen the show in Brisbane twice and I still don’t think I could explain what makes Hamilton amazing.
Because it is amazing. It’s unlike any other musical I’ve seen, and I’ve been privileged to see quite a few over the years. I was worried that my familiarity with the original cast would dampen my experience seeing the all Australian cast, but I was wrong. There’s something magical about being in ‘the room where it happened’. Hamilton received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 70th Tony® Awards, taking home 11 including Best Musical and yet it’s not really enough to say, ‘it’s a great musical’. I think it’s a musical for people who don’t like musicals.

Essentially I recommend the musical.
I have convinced staunch musical critics to watch the Disney+ special and they came away singing its praises. My mum loathes rap of any kind and yet she clapped along with gusto after every song. My boss was apprehensive going in, ended up loving it. Just like Alexander Hamilton himself, this musical defies odds and I’m staking my reputation on the fact you’ll enjoy it.
Even if you’ve seen the Disney+ special, I recommend seeing it while it’s here in Brisbane. The cast are talented and bring their own unique twists to the show that would make creator Lin-Manuel Miranda proud. So proud he’s coming to see the show himself.
Fans (like myself) were excited to hear the news that The Tony®, Grammy®, Emmy, Olivier and Pulitzer Prize winning creator of Hamilton will be traveling to Brisbane to watch the show live for the first time and participate in an exclusive fan event.
Due to increased demand, new tickets have been released for dates in April however the season cannot be extended any further and the final Australian performance will be Sunday 23rd April. Don’t throw away your chance to see Hamilton.
