With Melbourne beginning their seven day lockdown today, questions are being asked whether the city can host the first State of Origin battle as scheduled.

At present the game is scheduled to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday June 9th.  The NRL is now hastily putting in place contingency plans, with calls for a decision to be made, and an alternate venue to be named as soon as possible.

Reece D’Alessandro is a reporter with Channel Nine’s Today Show and has been keeping an eye on the situation, telling 96five’s Ken & Nicky that things are getting to crunch time.

“As much as we’d all love our friends in Melbourne to host the game at the MCG, the NRL is now being forced to consider other venues.”

Reece said that the Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is pushing for a home ground advantage for game one of the three game series.

“She’s thrown our hat in the ring for Townsville to host game one.  There’s a brand new, $250 million stadium up there and she’s said that Queensland is ready to host the first game if needed.”
