Hey God, Can I Ask You Something? is a thoughtful and engaging children’s book by Brad R. Emery, designed to help young readers explore some of life’s biggest spiritual questions.

Aimed at primary-aged kids, the book tackles deep topics in a way that is both accessible and engaging, making it a valuable resource for parents and educators alike.

The book addresses profound questions, such as “Dear God, if you love us, why do bad and sad things still happen?”—a question that even many adults grapple with. These thought-provoking topics are presented in a child-friendly way, encouraging curiosity and discussion.

My children’s initial reaction to the cover was one of excitement, and their enthusiasm only grew with each page. While the questions are deep, Emery does a fantastic job of breaking them down into easy-to-understand explanations and the “Did You Know” facts sprinkled throughout the book add an extra layer of fun and learning.

That said, I did find myself needing to paraphrase certain parts for my five-year-old, and some words required additional explanation. However, this actually led to deeper conversations, with my children asking their own insightful questions and sharing their thoughts—something I truly appreciated about the book.

I did find myself having to paraphrase even further for Miss 5, and some of the words needed explaining, however as I read the question of their choosing for that day, I found that we were often pulled into deeper conversations, with my children bringing their own questions and insights to the table!

I give Hey God, Can I Ask You Something? a well-deserved 5 stars out of 5! Brittany Garcia

One of the book’s strengths is its flexibility, it allows for quick, simple reading sessions but also lends itself to deeper, more philosophical discussions. This makes Hey God, Can I Ask You Something? a great fit for children with shorter attention spans while still offering opportunities for thoughtful reflection.

The child-friendly language and sweet illustrations led to meaningful (and sometimes profound) discussions, and I would really encourage parents to utilise this tool.

After we had read through a few questions together, I asked my children what they thought of the book:

  • “I love how it talks about God so much!” (Miss 5)
  • “It’s like God is talking to us” (Miss 7)

We will definitely be sharing this book with our friends!
