Millions of people around the world are logging online to watch the transit of Venus across the sun today.

The 1 in 100 year event has excited astronomers worldwide – it’s only the seventh time the event has happened since it was first observed in 1639.

The most important moments will be just after 8am, for about 30 minutes, where Venus first crosses our view of the Sun, and again at about 2.30pm when it finishes the transit.

But experts are warning us not to look at it without proper eye protection.

A safe viewing spot has been set up at the Brisbane Planetarium in the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, and at the Queensland Museum at South Bank.
