Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the sale came at the perfect time, with borders set to open in the coming months.
“With Queensland set to open, now is the perfect time to experience the heart of Queensland’s outback onboard the Inlander, Westlander or Spirit of the Outback.
“Regional Queensland has done it tough throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, so I encourage travellers to head west and show our regions some much-needed support.”
Mr Bailey said the sale would kick off today (Monday, 1 November).
“Queensland Rail is committed to connecting communities across the state, whether to visit family and friends or for a holiday,” he said.
“The ‘2 for 1’ Outback Rail tickets are available for travel on the Inlander, Westlander and Spirit of the Outback – connecting Brisbane with Charleville, Longreach, Mount Isa and everywhere in between.
“From the incredible landscapes and rich farmlands of the Darling Downs, to the mining history in Mount Isa and the iconic Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, there’s so much to see and explore in Outback Queensland.”
Mr Bailey said the offer complemented the recent Great Queensland Getaway campaign.
“The $8 million campaign offered incentives on Queensland tourism experiences, including flights, accommodation and attractions,” he said.
“Thanks to our strong response to COVID-19, we have the freedom to get out and experience everything Queensland has to offer – now there’s no better time to do so.
“Offers from hundreds of businesses were available and the promotion generated more than 43,000 bookings. It was clearly a hit with Queenslanders, with some offers even sold out days early.
“It’s great to see so many people getting out and supporting local tourism operators across the state as we bounce back from COVID-19.”
Mr Bailey said heightened cleaning measures remained in place both onboard and at stations to support the safety of those onboard.
“Queensland Rail continues to operate to an Industry COVID-Safe plan including enhanced cleaning and hygiene procedures on all trains to support customers,” he said.
