New research has found that black tea can reduce several risk factors associated with heart disease, potentially lowering the chance of heart attack and stroke.
The study published today in the Preventive Medicine journal, found that drinking three cups of tea per day for 3 months led to a significant reduction in blood sugar levels and triglycerides (unhealthy fats). Further, the brew is associated with an increase in levels of HDL cholesterol (thats the good type).
In more good news for leaf lovers, black and green teas are brimming with polyphenols. These antioxidants help to protect blood vessels against oxidative stress and inflammation.
But brewer beware, the study was done on pure black tea. Milk and sugar may reduce the antioxidant affect.
But enough already with the science speak – lets get to the good stuff.
What do experts say on the feel good effect of tea? Most tea lovers can vouch for the fact that a sip of tea after a long day can cure a multitude of maladies the most notable, stress and anxiety.
Julie Clifford, founder and owner of Queenies Traditional Teahouse at Nundah says tea helps people relax and focus on the moment.
To sit and sip, and just be in the moment . to sit with the tea, noticing the aroma, holding the cup – its like a quick meditation moment, Mrs Clifford says.
And that there is reason enough for a good cup of tea. Excuse me while I pop the kettle on.
