Brisbane has been proposed as the host city for the 2032 Summer Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board.

Following a decision in February that named Brisbane as the preferred host, the board’s decision will now go to the IOC session ahead of the Tokyo Olympics for a vote.

“It is in the hands of IOC members to vote now on July 21,” IOC President Thomas Bach said.

“This commission looked in depth in all aspects of Brisbane 2032, as well as the strong support across the entire political spectrum in Australia,” he noted.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that if Brisbane is named as host city, events will be spread all across Queensland, including Townsville and the Scenic Rim.

“This is an incredibly proud moment for every single Queenslander,” said the Premier.

“The Olympics in 2032 sets Queensland up for the future.  It would mean over 130,000 jobs, $8 billion in uplift and the tourism and trade benefits for decades to come.

“The children in our schools will have the opportunity to achieve their Olympic dreams and it would put Brisbane and Queensland on the international stage.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said that this was great news for Queensland following the State of Origin defeat earlier this week.

“This is something that will deliver benefits right across the state, not just Brisbane and not just South East Queensland.

“The information released by the IOC today confirms that we have 84 per cent of the venues in place, and it also confirms that the other facilities that we need, are needed for our growing population, whether that be better transport or better roads, these are things that we will need.

“IOC President Thomas Bach has been to Brisbane, he has seen it with his own eyes and he has been a big fan of our city, our region and our state.”

The recommendation will now be voted on by the wider IOC in Tokyo on July 21.
