Experts are warning asthma sufferers to pay more attention to their symptoms, with new figures showing an alarming number of Aussie adults are not managing their asthma correctly.

The national asthma survey revealed a surprising shortfall in awareness of symptoms and a concerning ‘laid-back’ attitude towards the disease.

The survey found that while 88 per cent of respondents described the severity of their asthma as ‘average’ or lower, six out of ten felt their asthma got ‘out of control’ at least once every six months.

The head of the National Asthma Council of Australia, Associate Professor Noela Whitby, says the results are concerning.

“There is an alarming difference between adult’s perception of their asthma management and the reality. It appears they aren’t fully aware of their symptoms and don’t register that they shouldn’t be just part of having asthma,” Professor Whitby said.
