Stephen Briggs juggles two busy roles as both the Priest-in-Charge of the Anglican Parish of Grovely, and his role as Naval Chaplain based at Bulimba.
Rev’d Briggs told 96five’s Alex Milne that his role as a naval chaplain was to support both the servicemen and women as well as their families.
“They can come to us and talk things through confidentially, maybe get a different perspective on things that are happening in their lives. It’s about providing that advice, support and counsel.”
There are a large number of Navy recruits that come from South East Queensland despite the lack of a large base as found in other Australian cities.
“About 25% of Navy actually join from South East Queensland, and that figure is comparative across all three services actually. We have a lot of Navy reservists in the area and we also have a number of Navy personnel undertaking civil education within facilites like the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology.”
