Celebrating 10 Years of Fighting (and Climbing) for Freedom

The Boonah Freedom Climb returns in 2023, celebrating 10 years of fighting for freedom and the final Mt Edwards climb.

96five is once again proud to support The Boonah Freedom Climb, held on Saturday 29th April at Mt Edwards in the Scenic Rim.

After witnessing the devastation of sex slavery in India, Vicki felt compelled to act and along with her friend Tracey, they held a movie night fundraiser in 2013.

Over the last 10 years the fundraising initiatives have evolved to include dinners, The Boonah Freedom Climb and the virtual 20ks and 20 days event but the goal of bringing freedom to women and children experiencing oppression has remained unchanged.

96five’s Ken and Nicky caught up with Vicki Hinrichsen about their final climb and what drives her to keep fighting for freedom.

“Over the last nine years we’ve raised just over a $160,000 to raise awareness and to support Project Freedom” Vicki said.

Project Freedom is based in Phnom Penh and the project aims to support the vulnerable who are living in slum dwellings and surviving on minimal resources and money. The Project Freedom social workers aim to improve the mental and physical health of vulnerable groups in Cambodia, particularly women and children that are vulnerable to trafficking.

While Tracey and Vicki both feel that this is the last year for the climb, they remain passionate and committed to the fight for freedom. The goal this year is to raise $40,000 taking their total fundraising efforts to $200,000 over the 10 years.
