Voice to Parliament Christian Reflection by Brooke Prentis

This year, Australia finds itself at a democratic intersection as we cast our vote in the Voice to Parliament referendum. The referendum, which will take place on October 14, is a momentous event for the country, irrespective of our personal political viewpoints.

Brooke Prentis is a descendant of the Wakka Wakka peoples and an advocate for reconciliation between indigenous and other Australians, particularly from a Christian perspective – an Aboriginal Christian leader, Aboriginal and education consultant, keynote speaker, and company director with a vision to build an Australia built on truth, justice, love and hope.

She visited 96five’s sister station, Hope 103.2 to share a Christian reflection for us all to consider when approaching the upcoming referendum.

“We are part of God’s story, and always have been,” she said in the reflection below.

“Our dreaming teaches us who the Creator is, how to care for creation or country, and how to live in right relationship; these for me are three Biblical mandates.”

Since the announcement of this referendum, the country has been divided, and there has been a lot of debate about which way the vote should swing.

How can we, as people of faith, approach this referendum? And what should we be praying?

While everyone will cast their personal vote, the one thing we can all be unified in is that we all want an Australia built on respect, truth, justice and faith.

“Whatever the outcome of the referendum… how will you love your Aboriginal neighbour as yourself? May we all bring hope to this country, to each other, and across these lands now called Australia,” Brooke said.

All Australians of voting age will be cast their vote on the following question:

A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?

“For Australian Christians and followers of Jesus… we are the hands and feet of Jesus, the light and love of Jesus. The love of Jesus which is all inclusive and non-discriminating,” Brooke said.
